Johan Rockström ist ein international renommierter Nachhaltigkeitswissenschaftler. Unter seiner Federführung wurde mit einer internationalen Forschungsgruppe das Konzept der Planetaren Belastungsgrenzen für die Menschheit in Zeiten globalen Wandels entwickelt. Er ist ein Experte auf dem Gebiet der globalen Hydrologie, mit mehr als 25 Jahren Erfahrung auf dem Gebiet der angewandten Wasserforschung in tropischen Regionen und über 150 Forschungsveröffentlichungen, die von angewandtem Land- und Wassermanagement bis hin zu globaler Nachhaltigkeit reichen.


Zusätzlich zu seiner aktiven Forschungstätigkeit, die weltweit Einfluss auf politische Entscheidungsprozesse hat, ist Professor Rockström aktiver wissenschaftlicher Berater für verschiedene Regierungen und Wirtschaftsnetzwerke. Er ist zudem Berater für Fragen nachhaltiger Entwicklung bei internationalen Treffen wie dem Weltwirtschaftsforum in Davos oder der Klimarahmenkonvention der Vereinten Nationen (UNFCCC). Professor Rockström ist unter anderem Vorsitzender des Fachbeirates der EAT Foundation, Vorsitzender der Earth Commission, Mitglied der Expertengruppe der Europäischen Kommission ‚Mission Board for adaptation to climate change including societal transformation‘ und Mitglied der Deutschen Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina. Im Jahr 2015 erhielt er den Deutschen Bundesumweltpreis.

Johan Rockström ist an zahlreichen Forschungsaktivitäten beteiligt, die das breite Spektrum Erdsystem und globalen Nachhaltigkeit im Anthropozän abdecken. Die hier aufgeführten Beispiele verdeutlichen die Vielfalt seines Portfolios und lenken gleichzeitig den Blick auf seine übergreifende Forschungsfrage: "Welches sind die planetaren Belastbarkeitsgrenzen, innerhalb derer eine sichere Zukunft für die der Menschheit auf der Erde gewährleistet werden kann und wie kann die nachhaltige Transformation gestaltet werden, die uns in eine solche Zukunft führt?“

1. Erdresilienz im Anthropozän (ERA)

Earth Resilience in the Anthropocene (ERA)

Johan Rockström leitet das ERA-Projekt, ein Advanced Grant des Europäischen Forschungsrats, das als Gemeinschaftsprojekt zwischen dem Potsdam-Institut für Klimafolgenforschung (PIK) und dem Stockholm Resilience Centre (SRC) durchgeführt wird.

Ohne globale soziale Transformationen besteht die realistische Gefahr, dass Kipppunkte im Erdsystem überschritten und abrupte und irreversible Veränderungen ausgelöst werden. Obwohl wir um die Bedeutung nichtlinearer sozialer und biophysikalischer Dynamiken wissen, verharren wir oft in linearen Denkweisen. Ziel des ERA-Projekts ist es, die biophysikalischen und sozialen Determinanten der Langzeit-Stabilität der Erde zu erforschen und dabei eine neuartige Plattform der Community-Modelling zur Analyse von Nichtlinearität sowie abrupten Veränderungen aufzubauen, deren Ergebnisse informierend in die globale Nachhaltigkeitspolitik einfließen können.

2. Die planetaren Grenzen weiterentwickeln

Zusammen mit den zentralen Forschungszentren am SRC (unter der Leitung von Sarah Cornell) und am PIK (unter der Leitung von Jonathan Donges), leitet Johan Rockström das internationale Forschungsnetzwerk, dass den Rahmenplan zur Erforschung der planetaren Belastbarkeitsgrenzen vorantreibt. Diese Forschung reicht von der Erdsystemmodellierung der Wechselwirkungen zwischen planetaren Grenzen bis zur Entwicklung globaler Transformationsszenarien innerhalb der planetaren Grenzen (verbunden mit TWI2050, siehe unten). Sie umfasst ebenfalls Projekte, die eine Operationalisierung des Rahmenplanes der planetaren Grenzen anstreben (z.B. in Neuseeland).

3. Allianz für globale Gemeinschaftsgüter

Das PIK ist ein Gründungsmitglied der Allianz für globale Gemeinschaftsgüter. Zu den globalen Gemeinschaftsgütern gehören unser Klima, das Süßwasser, die Wälder und Feuchtgebiete, Ozeane und die Biodiversität, d. hßt. die Artenvielfalt. Alle diese Gemeinschaftsgüter sind für unser Überleben essentiell. Sie regulieren die Stabilität und Resilienz der Erde und sind die Grundlage für die globale Wirtschaft und die moderne Gesellschaft. Sie durchlaufen derzeit tiefgreifende Veränderungen. Die Stabilität dieses Lebenserhaltungssystems der Erde ist in Gefahr. Das Ziel der globalen Allianz für Gemeinschaftsgüter ist es, Bürger*innen, Städte, Unternehmen und Länder zu befähigen, sich an der Steuerung und Erhaltung der globalen Gemeinschaftsgüter zu beteiligen.  

Die globale Allianz für Gemeinschaftsgüter setzt sich aus vier Schlüsselkomponenten zusammen:

  • Die Earth Commission

Mit Johan Rockström als Ko-Vorsitzenden und Ricarda Winkelmann als Mitglied spielt das PIK eine zentrale Rolle in der Earth Commission. Die neuesten Forschungsergebnisse werden in der Earth Commission von den Wissenschaftlern und Wissenschaftlerinnen zusammengefasst, um die Bedingungen für einen gesunden Planeten zu definieren. Die Kommission informiert u.a. über die Festlegung wissenschaftsbasierter Ziele zum Schutz der lebenserhaltenden Systeme Klima, Land, Biodiversität, Frischwasser und Ozeane. Future Earth wird das wissenschaftliche Sekretariat der Earth Commission in Zusammenarbeit mit dem PIK und dem International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) beherbergen.

  • Science Based Targets Network

Zum ersten Mal wird das Science Based Targets Network wissenschaftsbasierte Ziele für Unternehmen und Städte für den Erhalt der Natur festlegen. Diese Arbeit baut auf dem Erfolg der Science Based Targets-Initiative auf, die in enger Zusammenarbeit mit der Earth Commission entstanden ist, und bindet die Bereiche Land, Biodiversität, Süßwasser und Ozeane ein.

  • Earth HQ

Eine Kreativ-Plattform, die wichtige Medienpartnerschaften betreibt und Produkte und Werkzeuge entwickelt, die ein neues Nachhaltigeitsnarrativ der globalen Gesellschaft unterstützen.

  • Systems Change Lab

Das Systems Change Lab wird den Fortschritt der globalen Transformationen aktiv beobachten, das sich rasch entwickelnde Verständnis von Zustand und Einflussmöglichkeiten auf systemische Veränderungen destilliert, kritische Lücken identifiziert und Unterstützung für Koalitionen zur Stabilisierung von Kipppunkten mobilisiert.

4. The World in 2050 (TWI2050)

The World in 2050 (TWI2050)

An der TWI2050-Initiative, die vom Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), dem Institut für angewandte Systemanalyse (IIASA) und dem Stockholm Resilience Centre (SRC) ins Leben gerufen wurde, sind über 70 Partner und Mitwirkende aus einem breiten Spektrum von Disziplinen beteiligt, darunter das Potsdam-Institut für Klimafolgenforschung (PIK).

Das Ziel von TWI2050 ist die Erforschung nachhaltiger Entwicklungspfade (SDPs) unter Verwendung nachhaltiger Transformationsszenarien, die durch ein Erreichen der Nachhaltigkeitsentwicklungsziele (SDGs) unter Einhaltung der planetaren Grenzen bis zum Jahr 2030 und durch eine weltweit anhaltende Transformation bis zum Jahr 2050 und darüber hinaus gekennzeichnet sind. Dies soll die dringend benötigten Informationen und Leitlinien für politische Entscheidungsträger liefern, die für die Umsetzung der SDGs verantwortlich sind.

5. EAT– the Science-Based Global Platform for Food System Transformation

EAT– the Science-Based Global Platform for Food System Transformation

Die EAT Foundation ist eine unabhängige, gemeinnützige Organisation mit Sitz in Oslo, Norwegen, die 2013 von der Stordalen Foundation, dem Wellcome Trust und dem Stockholm Resilience Centre gegründet wurde. EAT fördert die integrierte Forschung für gesunde und nachhaltige Ernährung und Lebensmittelsysteme, die zur Erreichung der SDGs und des Pariser Klimaabkommens beitragen. Johan Rockström ist Mitglied des Kuratoriums und Vorsitzender des EAT-Beirats, der strategische Beratung zu den Forschungsprioritäten und -aktivitäten sowie der langfristigen Strategie der Organisation leistet.

Zusammen mit Walter Willett war Johan Rockström Co-Vorsitzender der EAT-Lancet-Commission, die mehr als 30 weltweit führende Wissenschaftler und Wissenschaftlerinnen aus der ganzen Welt zusammenbrachte, um den wissenschaftlichen Konsens über gesunde und Nachhaltige Ernährung darzulegen. Im Januar 2019 legte die Kommission den EAT-Lancet-Bericht vor, der ausführt, wie eine gesunde Ernährung für zukünftig zehn Milliarden Menschen innerhalb der planetaren Belastbarkeitsgrenzen erreicht werden könnte.

6. Green Water to Attain SDG Goals in Africa: Integrated Analysis for Food and Water Resilience

Dieses Projekt - finanziert von FORMAS, dem schwedischen Forschungsrat für nachhaltige Entwicklung - begann Anfang 2019. Johan Rockström ist Projektleiter und arbeitet eng mit Dr. Ingo Fetzer vom SRC, Prof. Malin Falkenmark vom SIWI und Forschern des US Geological Survey sowie des PIK zusammen.

Subsahara-Afrika, wo Unterernährung, Armut und Bevölkerungswachstum die höchsten Werte der Welt aufweisen, ist extremen Schwankungen der Wasserverfügbarkeit und Wasserknappheit ausgesetzt. Dieses Projekt soll untersuchen, wie viel grünes Wasser (Regenwasser, das im Wurzelbereich des Bodens gespeichert ist) benötigt wird, um die Ziele für nachhaltige Entwicklung bis zum Jahr 2030 (verlängert bis 2050) zu erreichen, und wie viel Wasser unter verschiedenen Klimaszenarien zur Verfügung stehen wird. Das Projekt verwendet ein Modell für grünes und blaues (Frischwasser aus Oberflächen- und Grundwasser) Wasser in Kombination mit einem integrierten Biosphärenmodell. Es erforscht auch Potenziale im Management und Strategien zur Sicherung von grünem und blauem Wasser für die Ernährung (Aufbau von Wasserresilienz) unter Beibehaltung der Ökosystemdienstleistung sowie der Feuchtigkeitsrückkopplung.
