13 PIK researchers part of the top one percent of the world’s most cited scientists

14.11.2025 - For the eighth year in a row, scientists from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) are represented in the top one percent of the “Highly Cited Researchers”. The prestigious ranking, released by Clarivate Analytics' Web of Science platform, is determined by the frequency with which scientists' papers are cited by other researchers — a measure of global scientific impact. The 2025 edition features 13 PIK researchers from different research departments, including PIK Director Johan Rockström.

Scientists can appear in multiple fields within the social and natural sciences. Researchers from PIK are recognized in the category “Environment and Ecology” and in the interdisciplinary category “Cross-Field”. The ranking highlights the significant scientific impact and recognition PIK scientists have achieved in their respective domains. In 2025, the following PIK scientists are among the top one percent of “Highly Cited Researchers” worldwide (listed alphabetically by surname):

This year Clarivate has designated Highly Cited Researcher awards to 6,868 individuals. Clarivate Analytics identifies scientists from around the world in one or more of 21 fields based on their contributions to highly cited papers. These papers rank within the top one percent by citations for their field and publication year in the Web of Science citation index over the past decade. The selection process combines quantitative and qualitative methods to highlight researchers who have made outstanding contributions to their respective fields.
