PIK Diversity Mission Statement


Equal opportunities and diversity are an important element of PIK’s strategic decisions and applied scientific culture. Moreover, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) regards the diversity of its staff and guests as a chance to achieve an inspiring and productive atmosphere. PIK aims to foster a positive and inclusive institutional culture to which every individual contributes and in which they can develop their full potential. In such a culture, nobody faces discrimination due to aspects of assigned or self-prescribed categories such as age, gender, sexual orientation, physical and mental capacities, ethnicity, socio-economic background, care responsibilities, religious beliefs and practices, or worldviews.

PIK Diversity serves as a voluntary working group that aims to support PIK in being and becoming more

  • welcoming and attractive to a diverse group of people,
  • successful in creating an inspiring and inclusive scientific and social culture, and
  • supportive of employees and guests in addressing barriers faced due to diversity characteristics.

To this end, PIK Diversity will endeavour to understand staff diversity characteristics, and work with PIK staff and guests to develop suggestions for improving diversity related experiences. Based on these observations and suggestions, PIK Diversity will make best-practice recommendations and work with the PIK community to implement any agreed measures.

In its activities, PIK Diversity strives to work in an open and inclusive manner, taking into consideration all aspects of diversity. Members and guests of PIK are welcome to join the group and contribute their perspectives at any time.
