Taiwan’s Minister of Environment leads large delegation on fact-finding visit to PIK

The visit was part of a training programme for leading government officials in Taiwan. In addition to the Ministry of Environment, there were representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Finance, Education, Justice, Economic Affairs, Transport and Communications, Agriculture, Social Welfare, Digital Affairs and Sports. There were also delegates from the city governments of Taipei, Taoyuan, Taichung and Kaohsiung, and the county governments of Yilan and Chiayi. Taiwan is home to around 24 million people in an area about one-tenth the size of Germany’s.

When PIK presented an overview of their work to the Taiwanese delegation, it focused, in part, on the key future-oriented topic of removing CO₂ from the atmosphere. Another specialist presentation dealt with the effectiveness of different climate policy measures – a topic that PIK is investigating using machine learning, among other things. Finally, the delegates heard about research into current trends and policy strategies for scaling up renewable energy technologies.
