Sebastian's work is part of the flagship "Planetary Opportunities and Planetary Boundaries (OPEN)". He has a second research focus on food security as part of the working group on "Adaptation in Agricultural Systems".

Sebastian wrote his dissertation on the topic of  "Joint impacts of climate and land use change on the terrestrial biosphere". He currently works in the BMU-funded International Climate Initiative (IKI) IMPACT project which aims to provide support to SIDS and LDCs with science-based adaptation and mitigation planning. The work on food security is within the DARPA-funded C2P2 project.

Sebastian is also involved in the Intersectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISIMIP).
