PIK ranked among top five climate think tanks worldwide

07/05/2017 - The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) was again ranked among the best climate think tanks worldwide. The new Climate Think Tank Ranking by the International Center for Climate Governance (ICCG) places PIK among the top five climate think tanks globally and among the top three of climate thinks tanks in Europe. Altogether the ranking considers 240 cutting-edge institutions working in the field of climate change economics and policy. Based on a solid quantitative methodology and analytical data, the ICCG lists non-university affiliated think tanks in an absolute and a standardized ranking – the first measures the think tank’s efficiency in per capita/researcher terms, whilst the latter measures performance regardless of their efficiency and hence size.

Among the Top Climate Think Tanks in the standardized ranking are also the Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC) and Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) from the United States, the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) in Indonesia and the German Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC) in Berlin, which has been jointly founded by Stiftung Mercator and PIK just a few years ago and is headed by PIK's chief economist Ottmar Edenhofer. In the absolute ranking, the German Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig is among the top institutions, as well as International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria or the Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the World Resources institute (WRI) in the United States.

PIK was also specially mentioned as Top Climate Think Tank in Europe – on rank two in the standardized ranking and rank 3 in the absolute ranking. The ICCG Think Tank ranking is compiled on a series of indicators that assess the activities carried out by a think tank, including its scientific output, its degree of activity in organizing conferences, seminars and participation in the IPCC reports, its degree of dissemination, its web performance and use of social networks.
