The ranking by Clarivate Analytics identifies the influence of the scientific work done and the extent to which it has inspired or challenged other research. For the ranking, data from the Web of Science, a literature and citation database, is analysed for a period of 11 years. The studies were attributed to the one field of science where they received most citations. With the vast store of citation statistics, the web of science stands as the authoritative compendium for impact and relevance in worldwide research. The 3,300 researchers listed in the 2017 ranking have together published over 130,000 highly cited papers.

Kurths´ latest research extends the framework of recurrence analysis, a tool to investigate features such as memory or disorder from patterns encoded in the return characteristics of a given state. The paper “Abrupt transitions in time series with uncertainties” was just published in Nature Communications.
