Mattauch, born in 1985, started his academic career at PIK as a PhD researcher under the supervision of the current Director Ottmar Edenhofer. After working at the University of Oxford from 2016, he returned to PIK in 2021. He is also Robert Bosch Junior Professor at the Technische Universität Berlin and still conducts research at the University of Oxford. EAERE has presented the award annually to honour researchers who are “judged to have made the most significant contribution to environmental economic thought and knowledge”.
At today’s award ceremony in the Norwegian port city of Bergen, it was announced that the nomination committee had selected Linus Mattauch from a large number of candidates, particularly citing his impressive list of publications. This includes nearly 30 peer-reviewed articles in renowned journals such as the American Economic Review, Science, the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management and Nature Climate Change. EAERE acknowledges the breadth of Mattauch’s work, which ranges from public economics, inequality, behavioural economics and political economy to applications in transport, health and food policy, and climate physics.
The association also highlights that Mattauch has co-authored papers with influential figures from diverse disciplines. Furthermore, the political relevance of his research is being emphasised, with the nominating committee recognising Mattauch’s commitment to reaching policymakers by providing support to the European Commission. It also praises his leadership in passing on his knowledge to younger scholars through research groups and activities.
