The medal recognises “an outstanding contribution to geographical knowledge through research and publication.” It was awarded in recognition of Rockström’s “dedication to communicating complex scientific insights with clarity and urgency” and his “unwavering commitment to engage directly with world leaders and policymakers at major international gatherings.”
RSGS Chief Executive Mike Robinson travelled to PIK in Potsdam to present the medal. Rockström thanked the RSGS for the great honour. “Science has never been more important than it is today. The world needs its scientists to bring their critical thinking and scientific reasoning to the interconnected challenges we are facing,” he said.
The Royal Scottish Geographical Society is an educational charity based in Perth, Scotland, promoting geography worldwide. The research medal was first awarded in 1931, and from 2009 has been referred to as the Coppock Research Medal, named in honour of Scottish geographer J Terence Coppock.
