Strengthening German–Kazakh Cooperation on Water: PIK Signs MoU with Kazakhstan’s Information-Analytical Center for Water Resources

11/11/2025 - The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Information-Analytical Center for Water Resources (IAC WR) under the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The MoU formalizes a long-term partnership to advance climate and water research and to support evidence-based water policy and management in Kazakhstan and Central Asia.

Under the MoU, PIK and IAC WR intend to collaborate on climate and hydrological modelling, including the assessment of climate change impacts on water resources. The partners plan to jointly develop decision-support tools for water resources planning under different climate scenarios and to model water and climate risks and forecasting systems. Cooperation will also include work on climate-resilient agricultural technologies and ecosystem-based solutions, the organization of joint seminars, trainings and workshops on climate modelling, climate change adaptation and water management, as well as support to pilot projects in priority regions in Kazakhstan and Central Asia.

The signing took place as part of the round table “Water Strategic Partnership between Kazakhstan–Germany: A New Level”, hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Berlin. The event brought together representatives of Kazakh ministries, German and Kazakh utilities, research institutions and international organizations to discuss new avenues for cooperation around water, innovation and digital solutions.

The round table focused on strengthening German–Kazakh collaboration in the field of water resources, with particular emphasis on water efficiency, water resilience and the establishment of a Kazakh–German innovation hub for technology exchange.

During the event, Dr Iulii Didovets, researcher at PIK’s Climate Resilience Department and project lead for Central Asia initiatives, presented PIK’s activities in the region in a talk titled “Strengthening Water Security in Central Asia Through Climate Research and Modelling at PIK”. His presentation highlighted PIK’s work on hydrological modelling and the development of high-resolution climate projections for the entire Central Asian region, which will form an important basis for the new collaboration with IAC WR.
