PIK scientist Alexander Popp lead author for IPBES Second Global Assessment Report

28.10.2025 – The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has appointed leading biodiversity experts to produce the Second Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. Among them is Alexander Popp from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK).

Alexander Popp has been appointed lead author for the chapter on future pathways (Chapter 4). He previously contributed as a lead author to the IPBES Nexus Report on the interlinkages between biodiversity loss and climate change, published in 2024. At PIK, Popp heads the Land Use Management Research Group.

The Second Global Assessment Report will update the 2019 report, providing decision-makers worldwide with the latest scientific evidence and policy options to protect biodiversity and ecosystem services. The report will examine progress toward global goals and targets related to sustainability and living in harmony with nature. The first lead author meeting is scheduled for November 2025.

Just like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), IPBES is an independent intergovernmental body, established in 2012 and now comprising 150 member governments. It provides policymakers with objective, science-based assessments on the state of the planet’s biodiversity, ecosystems, and the benefits they provide to people, as well as tools and methods to protect and sustainably manage these vital natural assets.
