FABLE Report 2020: Pathways to sustainable land-use and food systems

The Food, Agriculture, Biodiversity, Land-Use, and Energy (FABLE) Consortium has presented an updated plan on how countries can meet mid-century objectives on food security, healthy diets, greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity, forest conservation, and freshwater use. In part coordinated by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), FABLE's mission is to mobilize top knowledge institutions from 20 countries to support the development of decision-support tools and long-term pathways towards sustainable food and land-use systems.

The findings of FABLE’s second conclusive report suggest that integrated strategies across food production, biodiversity, climate, and diets can meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), but will require deep transformations in all countries.

"The contribution of the Potsdam Institute focuses on the land and food system in India. Together with the colleagues from the Indian FABLE team, PIK has employed and further developed the “Model of Agricultural Production and its Impact on the Environment framework” (MAgPIE) in order to provide assessment of policies in the Indian national context.

While FABLE has already strengthened analytical capacities in the 20 countries, there is more work to be done in the future – including fostering relationships with interested governments, training the next generation of analysts and policymakers, as well as expanding the FABLE Consortium currently led by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), with support from EAT and PIK.
