Nele studied Agricultural Sciences (B.Sc. + M.Sc.)  with specialization in Environmental Sciences at Kiel University (Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel). Her master thesis focused on the effect of treated wastewater irrigation on soil and groundwater characteristics (in particular with regard to boron content) in Tunisia.

Before joining PIK, she worked for two years as an adviser for rural development at the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) in Tunisia. At GIZ she developed and implemented adaptation strategies for smallholder farmers and conducted environmental impact assessments of the dairy value chain in Northern and Central Tunisia to support the development of national strategies.
