Fyson

Claire's work focuses on carbon dioxide removal (CDR), particularly in the context of 1.5°C-aligned mitigation pathways. She is interested in questions at the intersection of climate science and policy, such as how carbon removal can be fairly and effectively integrated into global climate strategies.

Prior to her current role at PIK, Claire worked at Climate Analytics, where she served as Co-Head of the Climate Policy Team and led the Mitigation and Modelled Pathways analysis group. She contributed to key initiatives including the Climate Action Tracker and the 1.5°C National Pathways Explorer, and her work centered on assessing the ambition of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), evaluating net zero targets, considering governance needs for large-scale CDR, and exploring when global emissions might peak. She also provided scientific support to Small Island Developing States during negotiations under the IPCC and UNFCCC.

Claire's career began at the Carbon Trust, where she worked as a policy analyst focusing on offshore wind innovation. She also completed a traineeship at the European Commission in the natural resources unit of the Secretariat General. Claire holds an MSci in Natural Sciences, with a specialty in geological sciences, from the University of Cambridge and an MSc in Environmental Change and Management from the University of Oxford.

Her published research addresses topics such as the fair distribution of carbon removal responsibilities among nations, the governance challenges of large-scale CDR deployment, and the role of land use in climate mitigation. She also contributed to the State of Climate Action reports.
