Clara Nicolai has an interdisciplinary background in earth and environmental sciences, remote sensing and geoinformation, and work experience in e-learning and science communication, knowledge and technology transfer, and project management. Her academic and professional career includes topics such as the biogeochemistry of soils, WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) and waste management in low- and middle-income countries, detection and monitoring of waste-related environmental crime using remote sensing, and transferring innovative remote sensing-based research into application.
Clara joined the Planetary Boundaries (PB) Science initiative in August 2024 as its project coordinator. Since May 2026, she is the Deputy Equal Opportunities Officer of the institute.
