PB-ResT (Planetary Boundaries Research Team) is funded by a grant from the Grantham Foundation for the Protection of the Environment. The grant provides core support for the Planetary Boundaries Science (PBScience) effort, enabling the advancement of the scientific foundation of the Planetary Boundaries framework, the integration of research and data, and the communication and application of its findings. The Grantham Foundation’s support was instrumental in establishing the PBScience Lab and in building its scientific capacity.
The overall objective of PBScience is to improve our understanding and assessment of the key Earth system processes that regulate the stability, resilience, and habitability of the planet — the Planetary Boundaries — and to develop robust, transparent approaches for monitoring how these processes are changing.
This includes:
Recruiting specialized researchers to advance and coordinate research across individual Planetary Boundaries.
Strengthening data, modelling, and analytical infrastructure for transparent and reproducible PB assessments.
Developing the annual Planetary Health Check, which assesses the current state and trends of the Planetary Boundaries.
Advancing research on Earth system interactions, resilience, and tipping dynamics, including through close collaboration with the TIPMIP community.
A further core component of PBScience is translating scientific advances into accessible and actionable knowledge. This includes outreach, science communication, and collaboration with external scientific, policy, and implementation partners.
Since 2025, PBScience has also formed part of the Science and Diagnostics Cluster of the Planetary Boundaries Initiative (PBI), an international initiative that brings together partners working to strengthen the science of Planetary Boundaries, broaden its reach, and support its practical application.
