BREATHE

ridging Research on Environmental Attribution and Health Equity

BREATHE aims to advance the emerging field of climate-health attribution by improving methods to assess how climate change affects human health. Existing attribution approaches examine either long-term climate trends or the influence of climate change on specific extreme weather events, helping to quantify both overall health burdens and acute health impacts. Current research in this field remains limited, with most studies focusing on heat-related mortality in high-income regions. Other major climate-sensitive health outcomes, such as malnutrition, diarrheal diseases, and vector-borne diseases, are still largely understudied. The project therefore seeks to expand the scope of climate-health attribution to include a broader range of health risks and vulnerable populations. In addition, the project addresses methodological and structural challenges, including limited access to health and climate data and the lack of fully developed attribution analyses in existing studies. By improving accessibility and supporting collaboration with relevant stakeholders, the project aims to strengthen the global evidence base on climate-related health impacts.
