The State of Carbon Dioxide Removal (SoCDR) project has established itself as a leading global initiative for tracking developments in carbon dioxide removal (CDR). Since the launch of its first comprehensive assessment in 2023, SoCDR has provided critical insights into the state of CDR efforts worldwide. The second edition, released in 2024, expanded the project’s reach and influence by incorporating broader expertise, introducing new data resources, and increasing international engagement. This work has positioned SoCDR as a trusted authority in the field, with its findings influencing global policy discussions, shaping international dialogues, and gaining widespread media recognition.
Looking ahead, the project aims to solidify its role as a central institution for advancing global CDR efforts. The core objective is to close the significant gap between current CDR activities and the levels necessary to meet international climate targets. To achieve this, the project’s strategy is structured around four key pillars. The first pillar focuses on enhancing data collection and provision by expanding global coverage and improving standardization and accessibility. The second pillar centers on authoring authoritative reports that synthesize the latest developments and provide targeted insights. The third pillar emphasizes outreach and engagement, strengthening partnerships, enhancing communication efforts, and broadening international collaboration. The fourth pillar aims at institution building, laying the groundwork for the establishment of an international body dedicated to supporting and coordinating CDR initiatives.
Through this comprehensive approach, SoCDR seeks to accelerate the global scale-up of carbon removal solutions. The project’s ultimate impact will be to contribute meaningfully to international climate goals, supporting sustainable development and fostering informed decision-making among governments, businesses, and communities worldwide.
