The laudatory speech for Schellnhuber was given by Cardinal Turkson, Ghanaian Cardinal of the Catholic Church and Prefect of the Dicastery for the Integral Human Development. The German Sustainability Award is being presented for the 14th time this year. It rewards pioneering contributions to the transformation towards a sustainable future. The prize aims to motivate all important actors to change, to network them across borders and to stimulate partnerships. It shows the best examples of how ecological and social progress can be achieved more quickly.

Other prize winners this year include Ursula von der Leyen, actor Forest Whitaker and singer Billie Eilish. Schellnhuber himself gave the laudatory speech for Mrs von der Leyen.
