“The Leopoldina, being the National Academy of Sciences, contributes actively to creating a basis of reliable scientific insights and clearly represented alternatives for taking action, so as to enable responsible political decision-making,” sayd Jörg Hacker, president of the Leopoldina, at the opening ceremony of three days of intense debate. 300 scientists from around the world were expected to attend. “The notion of Global Change bundles the most pressing problems of humanity,” says Schellnhuber. “The German National Academy of Sciences now tackles this issue in a more comprehensive way than hardly any other scientific organization worldwide.”
