After a presentation on global and European perspectives on the German energy transformation by Ottmar Edenhofer, chief economist at PIK, the attending scientists and Peter Altmaier discussed the feasibility and framework requirements needed to avoid crossing the 2 degree guardrail. Prior to this, Hans Joachim Schellnhuber and Stefan Rahmstorf, co-chair of one of PIK´s research domains outlined the latest research on climate change and political implications.
Peter Altmaier proved convinced of the necessity to act in climate politics. "We need a successful energy transformation to show there is an alternative to conventional energy and environmental damage. It is the best we can do to protect the climate," Altmaier said. After the presentations in the historic cupola, where Altmaier showed excellent knowledge of Wilhelminian architecture and the era´s inventive spirit, he met the leading figures of the institute for an in-depth confidential talk.
