"Below two degrees": annual conference of Climate-Service-Center

01/21/2011 - The Climate-Service-Center put their annual conference under the caption “below two degrees”. The CSC, which is a partner of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), invited numerous experts to debate how to limit global warming. Amongst the participants this friday in Leipzig there is Klaus Töpfer of the german Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies. Daniel Klingenfeld of PIK gives a talk about "Fairness and physics - ways towards the goal of two degrees". He's on a discussion panel with representatives of the logistics company Deutsche Post/DHL, the carbuilder Volvo and the Helmholtz Centre for environmental research.

"Without a fair and comprehensive integration of the big industrialising countries within this decade, the limit of two degrees becomes an objective lacking the means", Klingenfeld says. The aim of limiting global warming to two degrees above the pre-industrial age corresponds to, in the perspective of physics, a global budget of emissions for the next decades. This calls for fair burdensharing.

The CSC puts four questions in the center of it's conference: Which policies must be tackled? How can companies be transformed in order to reduce emissions? How expensive is the two-degrees-goal for business and society, and what is the cost of inaction? Why is it so hard for people to live environmentally conscious even though they know the consequences?
