Joint Statement on Biodiversity Research and Digital Sequence Information

Joint Statement on Biodiversity Research and Digital Sequence Information

March, 2023

A coalition of leading German research institutions submitted a joint statement to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The alliance—including the Leibniz Research Network Biodiversity, DNFS, VBIO e.V., and several NFDI consortia—advocates for fair and equitable benefit-sharing from the use of Digital Sequence Information (DSI). Emphasizing non-monetary contributions and international collaboration, the statement highlights the vital role of biodiversity science in supporting the goals of the Global Biodiversity Framework and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It also calls for stronger inclusion of academic research perspectives in preparations for COP 16.
