Student research topics

 

Several of our potential research topics entail analyses of the recently completed Food and Agricultural Approaches to Reducing Malnutrition (FAARM) trial in rural Bangladesh, including:

Determinants of micronutrient deficiencies among women and children

Examine underlying determinants (e.g. household and individual characteristics, nutrition knowledge, etc.) of micronutrient deficiencies in the FAARM population at baseline (2015).

Required skills: Basic knowledge of epidemiology and statistics, and Stata programming skills or willingness to learn these. 

Development of improved dietary recommendations for children

Characterize child diets in the FAARM population using linear programming optimization and develop child feeding recommendations based on that.

Required skills: Experience in data management / processing, basic knowledge of dietary assessment, and willingness to learn optimization software (OptiFood)

Quantifying pesticide use and exposure of rural households

Characterize pesticide use and exposure in the FAARM population and create a pesticide exposure score.

Required skills: Basic knowledge of statistics, previous experience in data management and Stata programming skills or willingness to learn these

Fuel use and health outcomes among the FAARM population

Describe the fuel use systems and associated health outcomes (burns and acute respiratory infections) among women and children.

Required skills: Basic knowledge of epidemiology and statistics, and Stata programming skills or willingness to learn these. 

Quantifying program uptake in the FAARM trial

Quantify uptake of the homestead food production intervention through analysis of program monitoring datasets including attendance, participation, and increases in knowledge and early adoption of practices.

Required skills: Basic knowledge of statistics, previous experience in data management and Stata programming skills or willingness to learn these

Description of animal ownership patterns in the FAARM population and estimation of impact and trade-offs

Describe the patterns of animal husbandry and identify impacts of the FAARM intervention. As FAARM directly promoted poultry management, this project would include examining if other types of animal husbandry were reduced to account for these activities.

Required skills: Basic knowledge of epidemiology and statistics, and Stata programming skills or willingness to learn these. 

Impact of homestead food production on household wealth and income in the FAARM trial

Estimate the impact the homestead food production intervention had on consumption expenditure and asset accumulation in the FAARM trial. The resulting publication will not only look at aggregate gains but also on how income was spent and what assets were acquired.

Impact of homestead food production on women’s empowerment in health and nutrition in the FAARM trial

Estimate the impact the homestead food production intervention had on standardized indicators of empowerment in health and nutrition.
