Abel was a member of the working group Adaptation in Agricultural Systems at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research from 2018 to 2023 and continued to engage with the group as a guest researcher after his appointment as professor at the University of Twente in 2023. He was part of the working group since its beginnings and left a significant mark in shaping it - not only through his impressive scientific contributions, but above all through his big heart and energy.

His passion for research on climate-affected agricultural systems in Africa, and his focus on strengthening the resilience of smallholder farmers, led to fundamentally important findings in the scientific field. Especially his research and enthusiasm on coffee yielded groundbreaking insights that will continue to shape research, policy and practice.

Abel is remembered as an exceptionally kind, supportive, and generous person. For many, he was not only a valued colleague, but also a close and trusted friend. His boundless energy, unwavering dedication, and infectious enthusiasm will be deeply missed, especially at a time when his guidance and wisdom would be so greatly needed.

Abel never hesitated to help others, regardless of how much time or effort it took. His vision and warmth inspired everyone fortunate to work with him. These rare and precious qualities made Abel a person who truly made the world a better place, reminding those around him that compassion and care are powerful forces for solving even the most complex challenges.

His impressive academic contributions and his deep commitment to supporting young researchers will have a lasting impact in the scientific community. Beyond that, it is his friendship and humanity that will endure and remain with us.

The PIK community, especially colleagues in the working group Adaptation in Agricultural Systems and Research Department 2, extend their heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathy to everyone who knew Abel, especially to his family.
