Julia Tomalka

Scientist
Tomalka

Julia Tomalka is part of the working group Adaptation in Agricultural Systems, where she coordinates and supports various research projects, focusing on analyses of differential vulnerability and adaptive capacity in the agricultural sector in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. At the heart of her research are different types of farmers, particularly women and youth, as well as different social factors, which may hamper individual-level adaptive capacity, such as migration or unshelteredness. With a background in social sciences and urban geography, Julia is also interested in urban-rural interactions and the role of peri-urban agriculture for climate adaptation. Furthermore, she coordinates and supports the development of research proposals, including to the Horizon Europe programme, the German Research Foundation and other national and international donors, managing people and ideas. With a strong interest in audiovisual media and science communication, Julia oversees all media and communication activities of the working group, including their planning and implementation.
