A high-level delegation from Pakistan visited the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) on 22 October 2026 for a scientific and technical exchange on climate change, water resources, agriculture and adaptation. The visit was coordinated by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) Pakistan. The delegation included senior government officials from the provinces of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
The meeting brought together provincial government representatives, GIZ staff and researchers from the Hydroclimatic Risks Research Group in PIK’s Research Department II (Climate Resilience). Participants exchanged perspectives on climate risks and climate-informed decision-making.
PIK researchers presented climate change projections and climate risk assessments for Pakistan, alongside approaches to hydrological modelling, water resource management, agricultural climate impact assessment and decision support. They also demonstrated how such modelling can inform impact assessments and the evaluation of potential adaptation strategies.
Discussions explored how climate impact research could support adaptation planning in Pakistan, including through climate services, water resource management, climate-resilient agriculture and decision-support tools. Participants also discussed potential areas for future scientific and technical collaboration related to the Punjab Climate Observatory and the KP Climate Action Board.
The exchange highlighted the importance of translating research findings into accessible climate risk information for government institutions and other stakeholders. The visit provided a platform for continued dialogue between PIK, GIZ and provincial government representatives on climate resilience and adaptation.
