PIK-scientist Levermann speaks to G77 and China at the United Nations

11/15/2010 – On 15 November PIK scientist Anders Levermann will deliver a speech in front of the UN Embassadors of the G77 States and China in New York. The subject of his speech will be climate change and the expected global sea level rise related to that. He was invited by the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) and the Permanent Mission of Germany to the United Nations.

Anders Levermann is Professor of the Dynamics of the Climate System at the Institute for Physics of the University of Potsdam. His research at the Potsdam Institute focuses on tipping elements in the climate system. He is lead author of the chapter on sea level change in the The Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), to be published in 2013. “We are moving on a path of global warming that is surely a threat to the existence of small island states. But also other regions such as the European coast of the North Sea or the catchment areas of Calcutta and Shanghai will be hit by serious problems,” Levermann explained. Therefore, members of the AOSIS demand strategies for avoiding climate change. In their opinion, global warming should be restricted to less than 1.5 degrees Celsius.
