Dr Brigitte Knopf holds a PhD in physics and is a head of the group Energy Strategies Europe and Germany at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. Her scientific work focuses on low concentration pathways of CO2 emissions for mitigating climate change. Her main interest is the transformation towards a low carbon economy and the economic consequences and technological requirements for mitigation. She coordinated a model comparison within the EU project ADAM together with Ottmar Edenhofer and is head of the group Mitigation Scenarios at PIK on the assessment of low stabilization scenarios. She was involved in a project on climate change and global poverty, which links the issues of climate change and justice. In a recent project she is developing long-term scenarios for the energy system in Germany and about the nuclear phase-out in Germany. Since 2009 she is Senior Advisor of the Technical Support Unit of the IPCC Working Group III.

Projects

European Network engaging Civil society in Low Carbon scenarios (ENCI-LowCarb)

The objectives of the Project are to facilitate information flows between Civil Society Organisations and research institutes working on low carbon energy scenarios and technologies. Moreover, we develop low carbon scenarios for Germany and France for 2050 with an ambitious greenhouse gas emission reduction target. Our vision is to provide input to the national, and European climate negotiations showing that ambitious greenhouse gas emission targets are not only necessary but also acceptable in an economic and social point of view.

ADAM

Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies for Europe (ADAM) will lead to a better understanding of the trade-offs and conflicts that exist between adaptation and mitigation policies. It will support EU policy development in the next stage of the development of the Kyoto Protocol and will support the emergence of new adaptation strategies for Europe. Work Package M2 (Mitigation at the Global Level) is one of 7 work packages within ADAM and is led by Prof. Ottmar Edenhofer and Brigitte Knopf. It aims at assessing the mitigation options of post-2012 EU and global climate policies.

Climate Change and Justice

The project “Climate change and justice. Climate policy as a component of fair globalisation and sustainable poverty reduction” sets out to analyse the interactions between preventing hazardous climate change and reducing global poverty. The objective is to develop suitable strategies and options for global climate and energy policy which will support rather than undermine national and international efforts towards poverty reduction.
