Development and testing of online-based environmental education

The project objective

The aim of the project was to provide expertise of the Potsdam-Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) on global and local climate impacts for educational practice in a way that makes it possible for students to understand the consequences of climate change for Germany down to county level. With the educational web-portal KlimafolgenOnline-Bildung.de and the linked teaching materials the PIKee-project provides an interdisciplinary offer in the field of education for sustainable development. The provided data visualize changes in the past, the present and the future in the climate sector and their impact on the sectors agriculture, forestry, energy, water, health and tourism. As a result, the relationships and effects of climate change can be investigated and, for example, adaption measures can be developed for different areas of life.

The developed materials

In the course of the project, 16 interdisciplinary teaching units, a tutorial, background information, handouts and worksheets were created contextually for the illustration of the climate change consequences shown in the web-portal KlimafolgenOnline-Bildung.de. They serve to explain the complex relationships within climate change and its consequences. The teaching units can be accessed through this website under Unterrichtsmaterialien und the website Lehrer-Online.

The developed teaching units provide interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary impulses for working with the web-portal in different grades, levels and for different types of schools. There are also teaching units for geography, mathematics, natural science subjects and English lessons.

Six "research workshops" offer the opportunity to look more closely at the 6 depicted sectors in the web-portal, e.g. climate, forestry or agriculture. Three different levels promote a more individualized learning for various types of schools and competence levels. The "research workshops" can either be used in regular lessons or in interdisciplinary project work.

Qualification and training offers for teachers

The project team offered workshops and training courses for teachers in Germany throughout the whole project period to serve the dissemination and implementation at schools. More than 1300 teachers participated and gave a very positive feedback. They described the web-portal as modern, motivating, and as true-to-life contexts. The participants carried the project as multipliers into their schools.
