Potsdam researchers amongst top 1% most cited worldwide

11/14/2022 - For the fifth year in a row, researchers from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) are among the top 1 percent of the globally most scientifically influential authors. The renowned "Highly Cited" ranking is published once a year by Clarivate Analytics' science platform Web of Science. The ranking is based on the number of times researchers are cited in other academics' works - one of the most important indicators of scientific relevance. Twelve PIK researchers are listed, just like last year, including the institute's directors, and from all research departments.

The ranking includes all disciplines. As a transdisciplinary institute, PIK is represented by researchers from both the natural and social sciences, most of whom are assigned to the category "cross-field". This is a remarkable confirmation of the high scientific recognition of the work across disciplines. The researchers who made it into the top 1 % of the ranking represent all of the institute's research areas (in alphabetical order):

  • Jonathan Donges (Research Domain "Earth System Analysis")
  • Ottmar Edenhofer (Director)
  • Katja Frieler (Co-Chair Research Domain "Transformation Pathways")
  • Dieter Gerten (Research Domain "Earth System Analysis")
  • Elmar Kriegler (Co-Chair Research Domain "Transformation Pathways")
  • Jürgen Kurths (Research Domain "Complexity Science")
  • Gunnar Luderer (Research Domain "Transformation Pathways")
  • Christoph Müller (Research Domain "Climate Resilience")
  • Alexander Popp (Research Domain "Transformation Pathways")
  • Stefan Rahmstorf (Co-Chair Research Domain "Earth System Analysis")

According to Clarivate, he Highly Cited Researchers 2022 list uses both quantitative and qualitative analysis to identify individuals from across the globe who have demonstrated significant and broad influence in their chosen field or fields of research. The preliminary list of Highly Cited Researchers is drawn from the highly cited papers that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and publication year in the Web of Science citation index over the past decade.  Ranked by country, the greatest number of highly cited scientists is from the US, followed by China and UK.
