This lecture will discuss challenges of an exponentially growing globalized economy and explore the best ways to meet them. As for confining anthropogenic global warming to the Paris corridor (1.5-2°C), three crucial goals need to be achieved, namely (i) the rapid sealing of carbon sources (almost-zero greenhouse gas emissions before mid-century); (ii) the protection of natural carbon sinks (e.g., tropical forests and wetlands); and (iii) the enhancement of managed carbon sinks (e.g., carbon farming).
The conclusion will be a reference to the brand-new “Charter of Rome” (8 June 2022), which promotes the close Re-entanglement of nature and civilization in cities and landscapes.
