Future of mobility: E-mobility, hydrogen or e-fuels - what makes sense (where)?

Online Lecture with PIK Researcher Falko Ueckerdt (in German)

Online Lecture - Tuesday, June 21, 2022, 6:00 p.m.

Dr. Falko Ueckerdt conducts research at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research on alternatives for sustainable mobility independent of oil and natural gas. Against the backdrop of climate change, he is investigating the most sensible strategy for replacing these fuels in a way that is open to technology and without reservations to continue using existing structures. All available technologies are included, such as the direct use of renewable electricity in e-cars, the use of green hydrogen or the detour via so-called e-fuels, i.e. fuels that, like hydrogen, are produced from renewable electricity and can be used in conventional vehicles and distributed while continuing to use the existing infrastructure.

Taking all aspects into account, however, his research shows a clear favorite for private household mobility with passenger cars. Dr. Falko Ueckerdt explains which drive technology should be chosen for the next car purchase and why. Can one continue to count on internal combustion engines and does one have a good chance of reselling a used car at reasonable conditions when changing vehicles or would this be a mistake and would a fully electric model be the better choice.

The lecture takes place in the context of an on-line lecture series, which is organized by Bau- & Energie Netzwerk (BEN) Mittelrhein, the start was already on 6 June.
