19/10/2016 - Carlos A. Nobre, one of the world-leading researchers on the Amazon rainforest and, among several high-ranking engagements, Member of the UN-Secretary General's Science Advisory Board on Global Sustainability, visited the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.
Nobre gave a talk to PIK researchers on "The fate of the Amazon Forests" to elucidate the impacts of land-use and climate change on this biodiversity hotspot. In this context, tipping points have been identified which must not be transgressed in order to avoid a progressing "savannization" of this unique ecosystem.
Nobre, who was recently awarded with the Volvo Environment Prize, also met with PIK director John Schellnhuber and chief economist Ottmar Edenhofer for extended discussions. Topical exchanges with PIK research domain co-chair Helga Weisz and senior researchers Kirsten Thonicke as well as Jobst Heitzig served to identify areas for future research collaboration.
