Anja Rammig´s research at PIK focused on the impact of global climate change on ecosystems and the impact of disturbances and extreme events on vegetation. She analyzed possible changes of ecosystem stability and feedbacks to the atmosphere based on models in combination with observed data. Among other studies, she estimated the risk of a large scale dieback of the Amazonian rainforest and the possibility of a so called tipping point for the World Bank. In her new position, Rammig will also estimate the impacts of changing temperatures, precipitation, CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere and human activity on ecosystems and possible feedbacks to regional climate conditions. She plans to develop new models to better represent for example nutrient cycles, biodiversity and the interaction of ecosystem and atmosphere.
Rammig holds a W2 Tenure Track-professorship. Tenure Track professorships are initially temporary, professors have to pass an assessment after six years. With this new scheme, introduced only recently, the Technical University offers a longterm perspective for young and international scientists.
