Prof. Dr. Elmar Kriegler ist Leiter der Forschungsabteilung "Transformationspfade" am Potsdam-Institut für Klimafolgenforschung (PIK), mit einem Fokus auf das Forschungsfeld "Klimaschutz- und nachhaltige Entwicklungspfade". Seine Schwerpunktthemen sind die integrierte Analyse des Klimawandels, Szenarioanalysen und Entscheidungsanalysen.

Elmar Kriegler ist Professor für Integrated Assessment of Climate Change an der Universität Potsdam. Er hat mehrere internationale Projekte zur integrierten Analyse des Klimawandels koordiniert und war Koordinator bzw. Mitglied des wissenschaftlichen Beirats mehrerer EU und deutscher Forschungsprojekte. Elmar Kriegler ist Mitglied des wissenschaftlichen Lenkungsausschusses des Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium (IAMC) und war einer der Entwickler der sogenannten „vereinheitlichten sozio-ökonomischen Pfade (Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs))“, die nun als Basis für die Erforschung unterschiedlicher Klima- und Entwicklungszukünfte genutzt werden. Er war federführender Autor des Fünften und Sechsten Sachstandsberichts des IPCC (Arbeitsgruppe 3) sowie des Kapitels zu 1,5°C Minderungspfaden im IPCC-Sonderbericht zur 1,5°C globalen Erwärmung. Er hat mehr als 80 wissenschaftliche Publikationen in Fachzeitschriften veröffentlicht und wurde seit 2018 von Clarivate Analytics als viel zitierter Autor gekürt. 

Elmar Kriegler erhielt 1998 sein Diplom in Physik an der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg und promovierte 2005 in Physik an der Universität Potsdam. Vor seiner Rückkehr ans PIK war er Marie-Curie-Stipendiat am Department of Engineering and Public Policy der Carnegie Mellon University.
