Christoph Gornott is an agricultural economist, leader of the working group Adaptation in Agricultural Systems at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and chair of the department Agroecosystem Analysis and Modelling at the University of Kassel. He conducts interdisciplinary research aiming to assess climate impacts and evaluate agricultural and climate adaptation policies and their effects on agricultural resilience and ecosystem services. His research evolves around the three pillars i) attribution (understanding how climate change reshapes economic activity and agricultural production), ii) anticipation (forward-looking analysis on climate change impact and adaptation needs), and iii) adaptation (evaluating long-term resilience and the effectiveness of adaptation strategies), with a particular focus on economic impact assessment and biophysical modelling for user-oriented and applied solutions. He has attracted and is leading more than 45 research projects funded by the DFG, EU, German ministries, development cooperation, Wellcome, private sector and others, and works closely with a diverse set of institutions active in international development cooperation and other relevant stakeholders.

Methodologically, I work in a strongly interdisciplinary way and develop a range of quantitative approaches, from econometric impact assessment to statistical and process-based modelling and machine learning. With these methods I analyse how agricultural production systems respond to climate stress and how regions build economic and ecological resilience in the face of environmental change. I combine large geospatial datasets from field trials, remote sensing and climate models with socio-economic data from farm and household surveys, which lets me link climate impacts on production and livelihoods to regional economic adaptation patterns at high spatial resolution. This integration of biophysical and economic analysis across scales enables me to evaluate both the effectiveness and the costs of adaptation strategies, and to identify where and how agricultural systems are most vulnerable to climate change.
