"The Paris Agreement is a milestone for international climate diplomacy - but it's not yet a breakthrough for ambitious emissions reduction," argues Edenhofer. The global cooperation for climate change mitigation needs to be strengthened by introducing effective tools instead of ever more ambitious targets, he says - otherwise, the aim of limiting warming to below two degrees could be at risk. "We're observing a worrying renaissance of coal," says Edenhofer. "Currently, the world is on a path to carbonisation, not decarbonisation." Putting a meaningful price on greenhouse-gas emissions could be an attractive option since this policy does not only allow to avoid long-term climate risks but can also generate short-term revenues for the participating states.
"The G20 are a very promising forum for discussing this matter since they represent no less than 76 percent of the current global emissions," says Edenhofer. "The coming G20 presidencies could substantially advance negotiations about coordinated CO2-prices along with a global climate finance compensation scheme."
