Close exchange with Japan

07/11/2016 - During a visit to Japan, Hans Joachim Schellnhuber further deepened the collaboration between the country´s scientific and political experts and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). In July, PIK director Schellnhuber had visited Fukushima and held a keynote at the International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (ISAP). This time he elaborated concrete scientific exchange and policy advice.
Close exchange with Japan

Schellnhuber met the current Minister for the Environment, Yamamoto Kouichi and gave a presentation at a hearing of the so called commission for the future, a committee with representatives from politics, science and the industry, who are meant to develop a long-term strategy on the future of Japan. Schellnhuber emphasized the necessity of phasing out fossil energy and explained the financial risks of nuclear energy.

Furthermore, he met with the heads of the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) to explore scientific collaborations.

Japan currently holds the G7 presidency. In 2020, the former environmental minister will organize the Olympic games and claims to design them as ecologically sensitive as possible.
