This year's United Nations Climate Change conference (COP) was hosted in Dubai and concluded the Global Stocktake to check what progress has been made towards achieving the goals of the Paris Climate Change Agreement. Many scientists from RD2 Climate Resilience have joined meetings and presented recent findings on a diverse range of topics:

  1. Bijan Fallah presented his work on "Modeling Climate Change in CA: Tackling climate change through increased regional cooperation" at the Central Asia Regional Pavilion during the side event on "Regional Climate Change Adaptation Strategy in Central Asia" on December 2.
  2. Stefanie Wesch moderated a side event including expert panel entitled "Assessing and Addressing Climate Change Impacts in Central Asia: Challenges and Solutions”. The session was held at the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Central Asia pavilion at EXPO CITY Dubai, United Arab Emirates on the 8th of December. During the same side event, Iulii Didovets presented results from his study on "Climate Change in Central Asia: Understanding Impacts and Strategies for Water Security".
  3. Iulii Didovets, also presented the pivotal report "Climate change impacts on water resources and extreme events in the Juba basin, Somalia" at a dedicated session in the Somali Pavilion also on December 8. This study, funded by UNDP and conducted in collaboration with adelphi, reveals critical insights on the expected increase in precipation upstream, leading to more frequent extreme floods.
  4. A climate risk analysis for Cameroon finalised by the Working Group 'Adaptation in Agricultural Systems' was prominently launched in the COMIFAC (Commission des Forêts d'Afrique Centrale) Pavilion at COP28 in Dubai. Key stakeholders from Cameroon, including the Ministry of Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development (MINEPDED) and the National Observatory on Climate Change (ONACC), discussed together with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and PIK how the results of the study could be used, what role science plays in designing targeted adaptation strategies and how multi-stakeholder collaboration can maximise adaptation efforts.
  5. On December 10, 2023, Prof. Fred Hattermann presented at the COP28 side event organized by the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The event, titled 'Water-Energy-Food-Environment Security and Integration in Central Asia,' held at the CAREC-Central Asia Pavilion, focused on sustainable natural resource management in Central Asia.
  6. Furthermore, the official handover of Memorandum of Understanding took place between  the Uzbek Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research on the 8th of December. Both documents were signed by the minister and both directors.
