Insightful workshop on 'Agroforestry for nutrition and health' in Nairobi

06/12/2023 - Within the framework of the Nu-Tree project, scientists from the working group Climate Change and Health organised a workshop to discuss the potential integration of nutrition and health aspects into agroforestry projects. Key stakeholders representing different sectors - from program implementers and researchers to civil society and policymakers - and different disciplines came together in Nairobi to exchange experiences from past and ongoing agroforestry projects in sub-Saharan Africa
Insightful workshop on 'Agroforestry for nutrition and health' in Nairobi

Over 40 participants from Kenya and the wider region joined the hybrid workshop to give their insights on the research gaps and implementation challenges of past and current attempts at integrating nutrition and health into agroforestry programs.

Dr Amanda Wendt, Dr Katja Kehlenbeck and Dr. Jilian Waidt presented the project, a first version of their conceptual framework as well as methods and indicators for monitoring and evaluation of nutrition and health aspects in agroforestry programs. Participants reflected on the outputs and refined the conceptual framework and contributed to possible solutions for better integration of nutrition and health into future agroforestry programs.

The workshop was a very successful start of cooperation on this topic. Many participants expressed their interest in the general topic and in using the network for the development of future projects together.

The Nu-Tree project's aim is to create awareness of the nutrition and health aspects of agroforestry projects for key stakeholders and to support the implementation and evaulation of those aspects in future programs. Nu-Tree will develop and disseminate a conceptual framework and a roadmap to promote and guide the incorporation of health and nutrition aspects in future agroforestry projects. The project is funded by the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU).
