Advection-diffusion-networks: on the relationship of flow dynamics and climate network topology

Climate networks have in recent years produced a multitude of new insights into the climate system. Here the question of the interpretation of climate networks and their network measures is approached from a general perspective, in order to derive a correspondence between properties of the network topology and properties of the underlying physical system. To this end I present two methods of network construction from a velocity field, using the advection-diffusion-equation (ADE) for temperature-dissipation in the system and analyse the resulting networks using common network measures to gain an intuition about their relation to parameters of the underlying system.
