Im Vorfeld des Gipfels hat das PIK eine Reihe von Studien zur Information von Entscheidungsträgern veröffentlicht. Eine Studie von Sabine Mathesius und Hans Joachim Schellnhuber zur langfristigen Ozeanversauerung unter der Annahme, dass zukünftig CO2 aus der Atmosphäre entfernt wird, ist die aktuelle Titelgeschichte von Nature Climate Change. Zu den nationalen Plänen zur Emissionsreduktion, den sogenannten INDCs, haben Malte Meinshause und ein internationales Konsortium mit Elmar Kriegler vom PIK Artikel und Berichte veröffentlicht. Den Wohlfahrtseffekt von CO2-Steuern haben Max Franks und Ottmar Edenhofer in einer Studie untersucht. Wenn keine Schritte zur Stabilisierung des Klimas unternommen werden und alle verfügbaren fossilen Brennstoffe verfeuert würden, könnte das gesamte Eis der Antarktis langfristig komplett schmelzen, was langfristig zu einem erheblichen Meeresspiegelanstieg führen würde. Das zeigt eine Studie von Ricarda Winkelmann und Anders Levermann.
