Water Balance Model

Model Description:

WBalMo calculates the water balance between natural discharges and

water use in large river basins. As natural discharges at each site is used a

management of reservoirs. By variant calculations an optimization of the management rules can be done. Besides a variety of standard model objects freely programmable routines can be used to incorporate any kind of submodels, like demand or assessment functions.

Input Data: Static data: structure of river network (sub catchments, calculation profiles) capacity and management rules of reservoirs/transfers. Dynamic data: amount of withdrawals or releases, minimum required discharges, realizations of discharges at multiple sites and of meteorological data, required for water balance. Parameter of user-defined sub models.

Results: Statistical values of any kind of system variables like discharges, storage of reservoirs, amount of transferred water, realized withdrawals and releases.

Resolution: No restriction on spatial resolution. Time step is one month, but in special cases (flood, water quality sub models) can be used daily time step.

Operating system: Windows

Programming language: Fortran, C++, Avenue

M
odel run time: 2.5 hours for the whole Elbe river basin and 100 realizations each by 50 years.h
