The water cycle in a river basin area is sensitive to changes in climate and land use.
The Elbe region is one of the driest major river basins in Europe due to its comparatively low precipitation (around 600 mm/a), and has the second lowest water availability per capita. Extremely periods of drought with their associated problems of water availability and water quality issues effects both ecosystems and water users and may cause serious issues of conflicts.
It is expected that water quantity problems will accelerate in future, because both the observed and the projected climate trend show an increase in temperature and a decrease in annual precipitation, especially in the summer. According to the new EU study, Czech Republic will face shortage of water in 2050.

The conference will focus on climate change impacts in the Czech-German Elbe river basin and introduce current research work of Czech and German scientists.
We will present results on analyses of the global change effects on the water quantity and water quality management and their socio-economic impacts in the Elbe region . These results were obtained within the project GLOWA-Elbe.
GLOWA-Elbe, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, identifies, investigates and models change processes that have an adverse effect on the water cycle and thus on people and nature. The aim is to develop strategies that can be applied today and in the future to mitigate the region’s vulnerability to global climate change. To serve decision making in industry, government and administration, and also by other stakeholders, strategies will be identified that can contribute to sustainable water management in the project region.
