evaluative information:
success factors:
technical know how, soil and moisture conservation, availability of fruit saplings
limiting factors:
dysfunctional SHGs, absence of market linkages, no value addition
synergies to mitigation:
yes: vermi compost and organic agriculture methods
no regret / win-win option:
no regret/win win: no regret: Irrespective of climate change the livelihood options generated, protective irrigation measures will help the communities to enhance their income, win win: income from sale and procesing of fruits and irrigation measures will help cope with the impacts of climate change
project evaluation:
The program began with 42 families in 1982 at Vansda, today the tribal development programme covers more than 23,000 families in three blocks of South Gujarat. Huge tracts of wastelands have been converted into orchards. Some acheivements of the program have been: livelihood prmotion and conservation of natural resources, reduction in migration, shift to commercial crops, increase in cropping intensity, processing of cashew and mango, improved health and sanitation, capacity building of women’s SHGs, adoption of Wadi model by families that were not participating earlier.
