R 3.4.4 optimized build available on the Cluster

R 3.4.4 released on March 15, 2018, has now been built with the newest Intel compilers, MKL libraries and most optimizations for our Cluster hardware.

You can find the R release notes for this version here. To use the new R you will need to have the intel/2018.1 module in your environment together with the other common dependencies (as below):

module load intel/2018.1
module load compiler/gnu/7.3.0
module load R/3.4.4

I have rebuilt most of the packages that were available in the R/3.4.1 module. Considering that this is a bug-fix release and most likely the last before the next major release R 3.5.0, most users can look forward to an easy migration and can also expect to rely on this release for a longer period of time.

Please note that just like the previous R 3.4.1 module, this is also built without X-Windows support. This is a build configuration intended to minimize differences between compute nodes (that do not have X-Windows) and testing that is being done on the login nodes. Among other things, this means that calling plot() and similar commands interactively will cause a file called Rplot.pdf to be written in your working directory instead of popping up on your screen. If you are used to a lot of interactive plotting as part of your development, you can keep this file open in an image viewer and refresh it every time you call plot(). A better approach would be to automatically create filenames for your plots and write them out.

Users requiring NetCDF, GDAL and PROJ4 will need to use the following load sequence exactly in this order:

module load intel/2018.1
module load compiler/gnu/7.3.0
module load netcdf-c/4.6.1/intel/serial
module load curl/7.58.0
module load R/3.4.4
module load gdal/2.2.4
module load proj4/5.0.1

Please write to cluster-support regarding any incompatibilities that you experience or to request new libraries to be added for this R module.
