Transdisciplinary Concepts & Methods - Research Domain IV

The ultimate goal of Research Domain 4 is to integrate complexity and sustainability science by developing and applying new modelling and analysis methods based on complex networks theory to pertinent questions in climate change and social metabolism research.

Flagship Projects

How can we improve the knowledge about extreme events and climate transitions in past, presence, and future under explicit consideration of uncertainties, missing information, and highly complex relationships?

Is the complex interacting networks approach appropriate to study challenging problems of changing climate and their impact on geoecological and socio-economic systems?

What is the mid- and long-term coevolution of natural and socio-economic
subsystems of the Earth system and its relationship to planetary boundaries?

How can adaptive network modeling be utilized to improve our understanding of the structure, the evolution and the potential vulnerability of global metabolic flows?
