FAO

Estimation of food calorie demand

Objective

Estimation of total food calorie demand per capita assuming an under proportional increase with income as well as estimation of the shares of animal, staple food and fruit and vegetable-based calories in total food calories per capita. The estimations will be used to parameterise the demand system of the partial equilibrium model GAPS and will be used to derive long-term projections of the agricultural sector. The latter is a core activity of the Global Perspectives Team and is well/inked to FAO 's strategic objectives, mainly S06,   as it informs the various activities on future expectations of natural resource use and food security related implications of the anticipated growth of agricultural production.

Outputs

PIK will produce, achieve or deliver the following outputs:

1) A dataset with the estimated parameters regarding total calorie demand and calorie shares of animal, staple food and fruit and vegetables and

2) a report describing the estimation procedure.

Activities

PIK will undertake the following activities:

1) apply the Engel curve for total food calorie demand per capita and estimate it as a function of income and

2) estimate the per capita shares of animal, staple food and fruit and vegetable-based calories as a function of income per country.
