BMUB funds IKI-IMPACT project

The IKI-IMPACT project "Unterstützung von SIDS und LDC zur wissenschaftsbasierten Anpassungs- und Minderungsplanung, Zugang zu internationaler Klimafinanzierung und zur Umsetzung und weiteren Ausgestaltung des Paris-Abkommens" will be funded by BMUB within the International Climate Initiative.

SIDS and LDCs are amongst the countries most affected by climate change impacts, but often lack capacities to formulate science-based implementation strategies, to access financial resources and to represent their interests in international negotiations.

To enhance these capacities, activities are conducted in five areas, targeting experts from science and policy at the national, regional and international level:

• Analysis of global transformational pathways, including global ambition and requirements in line with the 1.5°C goal to inform implementation and international negotiations,

• Regional analysis of impacts, vulnerability, adaptation, adaptation costs and residual impacts to inform science-based policy-making,

• Improving ability to access international climate finance and shaping the international climate finance architecture,

• National implementation of science-based adaptation and mitigation strategies and capacity building,

• Support in the elaboration and implementation of the Paris Agreement and its supporting rule-sets.

PIK will contribute by further developing assessment frameworks to quantify the aggregate level of progress towards achieving the 1.5°C long-term temperature limit. The framework includes tools to derive all-greenhouse-gas emissions pathways from policy scenarios, calculate temperature changes until 2100, and assess individual Parties’ NDCs and long-term development strategies.

PIK has also the task of calibrating and adjusting the existing Dynamic Global Vegetation Model LPJmL to the project region, especially with regard to performance in (sub-)tropical regions and enabling regional scientists to use the model independently (Activity II.2).
